I, a Man (1967)

EE.UU.. Drama. 95 minutos
Título Original: I, a Man
Director: Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey
Intérpretes: Tom Baker, Nico, Valerie Solanas
Formato: DVD  Calidad: DVD
Idioma: Inglés   Subtítulos: Italiano
Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0220569

The idea for I, a Man came from a suggestion by Maury Maura, the owner of the Hudson Theater in the Times Square area where a new version of My Hustler was playing. This particular version of My Hustler included 13 extra minutes of sexually explicit footage at the request of the theatre in order to capitalize on the sexploitation market. Maury wanted another sexually explicit film to show after My Hustler finished its run and suggested something like I, a Woman, a Swedish film about a nymphomanic that had successfully toured the art-house circuit in early 1967. (FAW29)

Nico had agreed to be in the film as long as she could do it with Jim Morrison who she had a crush on. Morrison agreed to it, but his manager vetoed the idea and Nico, instead, showed up with Hollywood actor, Tom Baker, who was a friend of Jim Morrison's from L.A. (POP228) Andy had been spending a lot of time with Nico but he never had the same rapport with her as his other female stars. While most other Factory regulars were on speed, Nico liked heroin. She was also a star in her own right and not as dependent on Andy as the others. (L&D273)

I, a Man follows Tom as he sees six different women in one day in New York, "having sex with some, talking with some, fighting with some." (LD228) One of these women were Ivy Nicholson, a model who had been hanging out at the Factory since 1964 and, like many of his other stars, had developed an obsession for Andy and thought that "she might be able to secure her fame and fortune not just by working with Andy but by marrying him," similar to Andrea Feldman who, in later years, would proclaim herself to be Andy's wife. Ivy's irratic behaviour included throwing a cup of coffee in Ondine's face and even shitting in the Factory elevator. (L&D260) In 1968, after Valerie Solanas shot Andy, Ivy threatened to kill herself if he died.
The first version of I, a Man opened at the Hudson Theater on August 24, 1967 and ran for 99 minutes. At the beginning of 1968, however, the Cinematheque-16 in Los Angeles was playing a 110 minute version. Later in the year it was edited again to 95 minutes - its current running time. The uncut reels were also included in Andy's 25 Hour Movie or **** (Four Stars).

I'm Still Here (2010)

EE.UU.. Comedia/Drama. 108 minutos
Título Original: I'm Still Here
Director: Casey Affleck
Intérpretes: Joaquin Phoenix, Antony Langdon, Carey Perloff
Formato: DVD  Calidad: DVD
Idioma: Inglés   Subtítulos: Español
Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1356864

----

Cited by cult director Monte Hellman as one of the most miserable shooting experiences of his career, Iguana was consigned to video oblivion in the U.S. and received a half hearted theatrical run through Europe. Too bad, really, as this peculiar and often compelling cross between The Tempest and The Phantom of the Opera is easily one of Hellman's most satisfying and visually fascinating films. However, those of a politically correct nature may want to find entertainment elsewhere.

Ika Hands (1988)

EE.UU./Colombia. Documental. 58 minutos
Título Original: Ika Hands
Director: Robert Gardner
Intérpretes: Robert Gardner
Formato: DVD  Calidad: DVD
Idioma: Inglés   Subtítulos: No

About the film:
In the highlands of Northern Columbia the Ika live a strenuous and isolated life, economically dependent on small gardens and a handful of domestic animals. They are thought to be descendants of the Maya who fled from the turmoil of Central American High Civilization’s warring states to the remote valleys of Colombia’s Sierra Nevadas. The Ika still inhabit a spectacular but demanding terrain extending between five and fifteen thousand feet, an almost vertical geography through which they move with prodigious ease.

Their lives are filled with a multitude of tasks, which they perform with a rare dexterity and purpose. Their labors, though they belong to two quite separate realms - the practical and the spiritual - contribute equally to the well being of everyone. Both days and nights are long and arduous. Indeed, the central figure in Ika Hands, Mama Marco, is a man whose priestly calling is simply another career undertaken in addition to that of farmer and householder.

Ika society is the result of quite distinct cultural choices, of what seem to have been decisions by generations of individuals to persevere with tradition and to resist the compelling alternatives offered by a ubiquitous modernity.

About the conversation with Octavio Paz
On Jan. 19, 1983, Robert Gardner was in Octavio Paz's library on the Paseo de la Reforma to talk about film and anthropology. With them was Robert Fulton who had come with Gardner to work on a long neglected film about Paz himself, a film that never materialized but of which this occasion and several other such scenes remain.

At this moment, Gardner was finishing Ika Hands. He wanted it to be about shamanism or at least the kind of magical practices for which the Ika were known. Going to Mexico to visit Paz was in tune with his belief in Paz as a person closer to being a shaman himself than anyone else he knew.

The idea was to invite Paz into the Ika world and also into his own concerns about how to represent that world: what can images tell us? Gardner hoped to do this by showing Paz parts of an early version of the film he was editing. The ensuing twenty odd minutes is the result of that experiment.

  • La cotta (The Crush), Olmi’s 1967 short about a young boy’s first love
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Restoration demonstration
  • New and improved English subtitle translation

A drama of Kwakiutl life in the Northwest. Best known as one of the premiere photographers of the 20th century, Edward S. Curtis devoted his life to documenting the disappearing world of the American Indian. In this film, originally titled "In the Land of the Headhunters," Curtis retold a tribal story of love and revenge among the Kwakiutl Indians of Vancouver Island. Curtis spent three years with the Kwakiutl to meticulously recreate their way of life before the white man came. In addition to the magnificent painted war canoes of the title, the film features wonderful native costumes, dancing and rituals--including a powerful scene of a vision quest. Restored from the only surviving print in 1972 with a new score of original music and chants by the Kwakiutls themselves, IN THE LAND OF WAR CANOES presents a magnificent image of a lost world.

Kurt Kren´s Action films are the most tangible way of comprehending the nature of Actionist works of art and events today. I´am not referring to the recognizability of an action´s dramaturgical details, but rather to the fact that Kren´s Action films make it possible to immerse oneself into their structural essence so as to grasp their energetic and aesthetic meaning.

Kurt Kren´s achievements with regard to the montage of short cuts in his early works was many years ahead of the rest of the (film) world, in both form and content. Kurt Kren was a pioneer: an avantgardist in the classic and best sense of the word. A filmmaker who knows how to think in images like few others in this trade, and who realized these images in films that are among the »most beautiful« and »most important« in cinematic history.

Granular Synthesis, the name adopted by artists Kurt Hentschlaeger and Ulf Langheinrich, is derived from granulated sound synthesis, an information processing technique for synthesizing digital audio.  A series of very short samples (grains) are sequenced, reassembled to produce a granulated sound synthesis.  Selected whole sounds (and/or images) are fragmented into tiny snippets (grains) and are also recombined to make whole new granulated sound or image continuums.

Employing monumental projected images and bludgeoning sound environments, the multimedia installations of Kurt Hentschläger and Ulf Langheinrich mark a new stage in the esthetic of sensory overload. Christopher Phillips

MANN & FRAU & ANIMAL (Man & Woman & Animal) 1970-73, 9 min
Instead of the holy trinity: father, son, holy spirit, instead of the profane trinity: mother, family, state, instead of the social trinity: father, mother, children the film treats the real trilogy in 3 sections. What unites man and woman (not uniquely for sure, but what is being concealed) is the history of nature. (V.E.)

The earlier films of Valie Export, one feels, were motivated by the author´s desire and needs to investigate her own subjectivity, with the audience as a necessary part of the transference and polemic. "Man & Woman & Animal" shows a woman finding pleasure in herself, the whole film a kind of assertion and affirmation of female sexuality and its independence from male values and pleasures. Thinking about my "quite erotic" tag of that film I realize that as a viewer I am experiencing a sexuality like that of childhood - one motivated by curiosity, a prosaic pleasure in looking, but free from fantasy. It is quite unlike the experience of ordinary pornography which is invested with the erotic almost exclusively through its symbolization of power. (Joanna Kiernan)

....REMOTE.....REMOTE..... 1973, 10 min
Human behaviour in contrast to machines (animals) is influenced by events in the past, as far back as these experiences may lie. Therefore there exists a psychic paratime parallel to the objective time, where the prayers of anguish and guilt, the inability to win, deformations which rip open the skin, becoming aware of oneself, have their constant effects. I demonstrate something which represents past and present. (V.E.)

....Remote....Remote.... was one of the films categorized by a considerable number of women as typifying despicable excesses and extreme violence. People frequently reacted to the film with horror, incomprehension and scorn. In showing emotion, gentleness and sensitivity as female qualities, there was no place for aggression - cutting and violently opening were equated with male behaviour; having to pentrate in order to possess.

When Valie Export shaves and trims herself, the sight of her provokes fantasies, revolving around acts done to the body. Yet there is nothing dreadful about a woman trimming her body, especially in the places where she enhances the glamour imposed on her body by the civilizing influences of the world around her. And the fact that you have to suffer to achieve beauty has always brought a knowing smile to a woman's lips.

The way in which Valie Export grooms herself however, involves unconventional touching and violation which goes beyond the familiar sight of a woman "harmlessly" doing herself up. This triggered, and continues to trigger, huge defensive reactions among many women. Such a reaction represents the easiest way of emphatically rejecting something that has got right under the skin. No-one is allowed to encroach into the recesses of our private existence, in which the damage suffered and our own self-mutilation remains safeguarded behind a front of normality. (Renate Lippert)

SYNTAGMA 1984, 17 min
My work in the area of short film focuses on working out what is essential to a film, to define it as a self-sufficient and closed artistic system; so that I can make use of the single operators, such as image and sound and expand on their creative possibilities of association. The actual significant operators such as film strip, framing, image content, image construction, montage, movement of the camera, visual effects, the interaction of the visual with the audio, etc., are combined with the cultural codes to create a syntactic construction, out of which a film is born. Such thoughts also explain certain structures of my feature films. The film sequences themselves are real units, which are semantically related to one another. (V.E.)

Marina Gržinić and Aina Šmid are major figures of Slovenian video art. Their political art attacks the multilayered root of the videographic medium and its relation to mass media. Using cross references from cinema, literature, theatre, visual arts and philosophy, they mobilize a vast cultural reservoir, which they re-read within the social and political reality of post-socialism. In their work transvestism becomes a linguistic strategy. Gržinić´s and Šmid´s works demonstrate that post-communist disillusionment may give birth to an extraordinary dynamism of resistance.

The Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Mara Mattuschka, who was born in 1959 in Bulgaria, and at the age of 17, as a mathematical wizard, chose Austrian as her second citizenship, is one of the most important figures in experimental film in Europe. She is also the connecting link between Valie Export and the younger generation of experimental Austrian filmmakers.

The most impressive point of her numerous films, and in the latest period video productions (Id, Plasma), is the way she relates to her body. Not only has Mattuschka been the main protagonist on camera in each of her (video) films, since 1985, when she bears the name Mimi Minus, her body is also the canvas, object and subject that is painted, stretched, shaved, deformed with special effects, etc. The other point of reference in her work is a persistent and powerful analysis of past and present experimental and Hollywood film productions, with intensive research into sound and music. Not only does she interpret her texts in the films, she also sings, shouts and integrates sound in different forms in her work, in most of cases as an acousmatic voice, although in the case of Mattuschka, this voice is invisible, but embodied, and subverts the narrative link (the authority) in the image.

NABELFABEL 1984, 3 min

The Mara Mattuschka DVD gets off to a strong start with NabelFabel/Navel Fable (1984, 16mm, 3 min.), by far the darkest film on the DVD. In fact this short is a good deal more terrifying than most horror films, with its striking images of confinement, claustrophobia, and social oppression.

The film begins with a mannequin’s face wrapped up in newspaper which is unravelled in pixilated fashion. The nondescript face is replaced by a human face (Mattuschka’s I presume) wrapped in a stocking. Layers are continually removed only to helplessly reveal another stocking below. Adding to the tension and sense of oppression is the pained expression of the face (also animated) and a soundtrack comprised of a heartbeat, the sound of material being torn, primal screams, photographic shutter clicks, and electronic music. Although the liner notes interpret the film as a symbolic second birth, the foreboding atmosphere can also suggest a person trying to escape from a painful cocoon of imprisonment.

DER UNTERGANG DER TITANIA 1985, 4 min

Of the 12 films presented on the Mattuschka DVD several recall the work of Valie Export, including two which deal directly with female sexuality. The more substantial of the two is Der Untergang der Titania/The Sinking of Titania (1985, 16mm, 4 min.), a comic, scatological love story played out in a bathtub, narrated by an 18 year old woman recounting her perverse sexual awakening.

The short film uses a mixture of live action with primitive stick men animation, but conflates the two forms by filming Mattuschka’s alter ego Mimi Minus, bath cap and all, as if she were an animated cut-out figure. The film’s style is of one piece, with even jerky left-right camera pans mimicking the animated movements of the Mimi Minus character. The tub drain becomes a surrogate anus, first ejecting an animated stick man sporting an erect penis –after which Mattuschka cuts in a subliminal close-up of a hand holding a phallic cigarette– and then ejecting animated feces.

CEROLAX II 1985, 2 min
In this film, a 1 1/2 minute long satire on TV commercials, Mara Mattuschka uses black and white live animation.

The star, Mimi Minus, has been invited to introduce the sale of a new product: a sticky-black brain washing soap, which M.M. first applies to her reflection, in order to wash one of her brain hemispheres clean, afterwards she applies the soap to her body: she sprays all the marks on her body and changes the spots to a new shade, then she numbs her senses with the miracle soap: first the pubic area, then the armpits, then the eyes, mouth and ears. In the end, the slightly devastated and freshly-cleansed housewife puts on a wig and looks scrutinizingly into the camera/mirror.

KUGELKOPF 1985, 6 min

In Kugelkopf, Mara Mattuschka subversively challenges the printing press and modern technology with her own body's power. Starting by shaving and slitting her head with a razor in sheer pleasure, she proceeds to make marks and patterns with the blood on a glass sheet.

The staccato motion of the ritual duplicates the golf-ball sound of a typewriter. This self-empowering act satirises violence against women, in particular the eye-slitting sequence in Luis Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou. The short concludes with another montage, this time of extreme close-up views of Mattuschka’s face literally being ‘painted’ in blood. This theme of painting on the body introduced in Kugelkopf with the animated blood covering the head and face is continued in later Mattuschka films.

PASCAL-GÖDEL 1986, 5 min

Using the body –in this case the hand– as a painting tool informs much of Pascal-Gödel (1986, 16mm, 5 min.), a formal study in contrast, with black and white, the use of a checkerboard, and positive/negative imagery.

The sparse black and white sets recall a film featuring another ‘tortured’ woman, Carl Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928).

PARASYMPATHICA 1985, 4 min

In Parasympathica (1986, 16mm, 3 min.) there is a continuation of the study in polarity and the black and white motif, with Mattuschka splitting her body in half vertically with her left side painted in black and her right side painted in white.

In a Spanish magazine, I found a list of characteristics considered positive and negative by the Catholic Church. With two exceptions, the positive characteristics represent passive attitudes. In my film, I represent them mimetically. Using animated imagery, I let the juices which are stimulated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system flow over the body: tears, sweat, sperm, vaginal excretions. (Mara Mattuschka)

LES MISERABLES 1987, 2 min

In this film, Mattuschka works exclusively with animation. The cheerful cartoon characters Mimi and Max have a childlike-bisexuality, even when the subject seems to be the desire for and differences from the other sex.

The characters are all spoken by the same voice (Mara Mattuschka's), and the characters' representation is therefore channelled into a single and fictive form of expression...

DANKE, ES HAT MICH SEHR GEFREUT 1987, 2 min

Of lesser value is Danke, es hat mich sehr gefreut/I Have Been Very Pleased a silly one joke film where Mimi Minus masturbates in a sea of overexposed white made to appear like a beach (she wears sunglasses).

Her orgasm is a reverberating, child-like laughter which gives way to a moan and a concluding line of dialogue which forms the film’s title: “Thank you. I have been very pleased.”

KAISER SCHNITT 1987, 4 min

The birth of the alphabet according to Mattuschka.

DER SCHÖNE, DIE BIEST 1993, 10 min

Der Schöne, die Biest/Beauty and the Beast (1993, 16mm, 10 min.) finds Mattuschka in pure comic mode, as a chameleon playing many roles to her baby child: mother (we see her breast feeding in close-up), entertainer/teacher (playing violin to her baby); protector (adopting the role of a samurai by using a kitchen knife as if it were a sword) and prognosticator (a fortune teller seeing into her baby’s future).

Der Schöne, die Biest is evidence of Mattuschka’s continuing exploration of the concept of ‘expanded cinema’ developed by Valie Export and others in the 1960s. An ‘expanded cinema’ trait visible in this and other Mattuschka films, and no doubt influenced by the Austrian Actionist films, is the heightened performative aspect of Mattuschka’s acting (as performed by her alter ego Mimi Minus).

S.O.S. EXTRATERRESTRIA 1993, 10 min

S.O.S. Extraterrestria is by far the most intertextual film in the collection, with a multi-perspective referencing of the classic monster movie. Employing some fairly elaborate miniature and special effects cinematography, Mimi/Mattuschka appears as a giant woman causing city-wide havoc.

The most obvious film reference is to King Kong, with the female replacing the ape as outsider/outcast/oppressed/exploited, but some of the set pieces and actions reference Godzilla and the pseudo-feminist The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.
The theme of masturbation also returns in perfect accord with the film’s intertextuality: the oversized Mimi ‘mounts’ the Eiffel Tower and masturbates on it (as revision of King Kong scaling the Empire State Building).
Mimi’s “grotesque body-art-performances”  begins with her in the make-up room putting on a bizarre costume which includes a ludicrous wig, and concludes with her performing all the famous big movie monster gestures: hovering over light towers, trains, and clock towers, swatting at planes, stomping on people, picking people up and eating them, scaling tall buildings, etc.

ID 2003, 10 min

The final film of the DVD, ID, is also the only non-16mm film on the DVD, and the first she shot on video (Betacam). The film, complex, poetic, and surreal, works well as the last film on the collection.

The film begins with Mattuschka, sporting a black wig, riding up an escalator which leads to a void which she falls into, in effect entering her own psyche, where she turns into a bizarre looking monster, part John Merrick, part lizard. The creature eventually splits into two, manifesting her döppelganger. The monstrous Mattuschka and her double dance in bizarre ritualistic movements that give way to violence and cannibalism (one rips out the other’s umbilical cord and bites it). This film cements another theme prevalent across her work, that of ‘masks’ that conceal one’s true identity, like the pseudonym Mimi Minus, but also through many physical masks (wigs, the stocking tights, the makeup in Beauty and the Beast, the mask in Ball Head, the crown in Parasympathica, and the monster döppelganger in ID). When her transformation begins Mattuschka is floating in a milky cloud, an image which gives the impression of a rebirth –another recurring theme. From this overexposed, white backdrop the film cuts to Mattuschka emerging out of a black marsh, with a backdrop of long straw-like black hair; she struggles with her döppelganger and then returns back to the reality of the escalator. The film is a perfect closer because it brings together the many themes seen across the earlier works: rebirth, the body, masks, the double, and the outsider; in short, the morbid with a touch of comedy.

A quaint and grandiose series of short reportage Volks stöhnende Knochenschau produced in 1980 by video artists from the inner and outer circle of the Medienwerkstatt Wien, a time shift into another world.

The Volks stöhnende Knochenschauproject, video newsreels that were shown as part of the 1980 Vienna Festival (Project group: Ali Aydin, Gerda Lampalzer, Manfred Neuwirth, Alfred Schwarz, Ferdinand Stahl, Andi Stern, Susa Zahraditsch)

The video newsreel project put together by the Medienwerkstatt Wien (which was called Verein Medienzentren at the time) was the first participatory media project in Austria to reach a wide audience, »on the street« so to speak. A decisive factor in making this possible was the use of a video bus for presentations in the countryside around Vienna (on village squares, in pedestrian zones, etc.). Vital to understanding the significance of this project is an understanding of the media landscape in which it existed. In 1980 Austria had two publicly owned television channels, ORF 1 and ORF 2, and there were no alternatives in the form of cable television or privately owned stations. The dominance of state-owned television lay primarily in its unlimited power to determine which topics were dealt with. Whatever did not appear on television did not receive any attention at all by the media, and a public forum for fringe groups, opposing opinions, special-interest topics, etc., now provided by a diversified offering of channels, did not exist. These conditions, one of the motivating factors behind the foundation of the first video initiatives in Austria in the late 1970s including the one launched by the Medienwerkstatt - were the source of the great symbolic value possessed by public showings on monitors. Reports that were at odds with what viewers were accustomed to seeing, in both form and content, were shown on TV, as the video screens were regarded. As can be expected, the onsite reactions were diverse and often intense.

Constanze Ruhm´s computer animations and films, of which a selection is presented in the framework of this edition, range between architecture, narration and performance, and investigate interrelations between the languages of cinema and new media. By short-circuiting the blank spaces between distinct contemporary "scripts", they deal with issues of identity and representation in order to develop from there a new syntax for present-day forms of representation and media narratives.

Lisl Ponger´s photographic and cinematic work investigates the circumstances of places and their territorial occupation by the camera, the acquisation of images, the function of photographic and cinematic representation, and the presentation of cultural values. Her works are characterized by that which is no longer present, which refers to that which is already absent. This is a latent component of each of her images and at the same time the particular political stance of her works. (Amine Haase)

»Almost all of Ponger’s films is concerned in some way with travelling. The sequences, from almost every country in the world, maintain their documentary nature even after the editing and re-working process. The end product, however, is never just about surfaces or recording events. Ponger makes use of structure and poetic associative montage so as to raise questions as to the nature of film itself or the function photographic or filmic representation has in reflecting and propagating cultural values.« Tim Sharp
»This is probably how documentary features should be in the new millennium.« (Imdb.com)

Passagen [1996]

Travelling Shots - Notes on the films by Lisl Ponger

Viewing Lisl Ponger’s films, one might be tempted to ask, as Lewis Carroll’s Alice once did, ‘’...but I wonder what Latitude and Longitude I’ve got to?’’ Almost all of Ponger’s films and indeed, most of her photographic work, is concerned in some way with travelling. The sequences, from almost every country in the world, maintain their documentary nature even after the editing and re-working process. The end product, however, is never just about surfaces or recording events. Ponger makes use of structure and poetic associative montage so as to raise questions as to the nature of film itself or the function photographic or filmic representation has in reflecting and propagating cultural values.

In Passagen [1996] the normality of the travel memories slowly begin to take on another dimension when we concentrate on the sound track. These accounts begin in Vienna. What is being described are individual stories of forced Jewish emigration from Austria, refugees fleeing from Nazi terror. The travelogue-like accounts coolly welded to family films of journeys taken for excitement and pleasure makes the private public and the public familial. It engenders a claustrophobic horror in the mind. But there is no respite.

As the pictures wander the exotic places of the world they have become tainted with the knowledge from the sound-track, the sensual pleasure freezes. At the point when you should be relieved at the escapes you remember those who didn’t. At the same time you realise that there are other stories of flights from imprisonment and torture woven in and on their way back to Vienna. This time they are told by immigrants seeking safety in the West. Specifically in Vienna.

From the beginning, as the images of déjà vu [1999] begin to parade across the screen, the viewer is seduced into their foreign but nonetheless eerily familiar flow. As with Passagen, these are documentary sequences of places and people but also of our longing for distant lands, colourful events and the 1001 star-pierced tropical nights which no camera can ever capture. It is perhaps only in retrospect that awareness dawns; that the film, consisting of amateur footage, is an archive of collective Western clichés of exotic Otherness. Geographical nonsense now dancing to another tune. These sequences may have been shot in all innocence but it is the innocence of unconscious complicity in Western cultural assumptions.

At the outset of the film, the sound effects work together with the images, enhancing their documentary character and colluding with the quasi-narrative flow. The courtship does not last very long. It is punctured in many places by something approaching unsettling irony. An example is the shot from the railing of a ship ploughing through southern seas. Sacred choral music wells up from the soundtrack. It has an emotional impact that sends a shiver down your spine. At the same time as it functions as ‘film music’, it has a narrative function and communicates significant information. The associations are manifold. ‘Big ships’ have visited these waters for hundreds of years, bringing Columbus, Cortez and Cook, but always bringing the missionary word and often the vessels of gun-boat diplomacy in their wake.

These correspondences occur frequently enough to be significant, and, in view of the rest of the sound track, act as life belts to be ignored at your peril because the second layer has a strong undertow. Real people telling true stories in a variety of languages and, as Bob Dylan would say, ‘something is happening, but you don’t know what it is’. The effect is such that it appears that part of the soundtrack has made a unilateral declaration of independence. It hasn’t, instead it is hung like a curtain, making numerous points of contacts to what is happening on screen.

There are eleven native languages in déjà vu, each reflecting a distinctive way of thinking and the cultural assumptions of those who speak them. Viewed historically, some of those languages (English, French, German, Portuguese) represent major export items - spreading the word with missionary zeal in the interest of the politics of power, economic efficiency and cultural presumption. In this post-colonial era we are still only half aware of the hierarchies which language creates. It is also worth considering the physical environment in which one watches the film. We are (willing) prisoners captured by flickering images. The soundtrack, however, turns us temporarily into colonial subjects. Fixed firmly in your seat you can escape neither the desire to understand, nor the improbability of having mastered eleven languages. This linguistic helplessness, coupled with possible annoyance or frustration, creates an emotional counterpoint to the seductive nature of the images and reproduces on a small scale the feelings of puzzlement and powerlessness which is the daily fare of the colonised.

By refusing to use sub-titles déjà vu sails dangerous waters, but it never pretends innocence nor allows itself to be categorised. It simultaneously negates and confirms categories - narrative, experimental and documentary. Its centre of gravity is an issue - the way we structure what we see as knowledge in relation to other cultures and the way those structures, in turn, determine what we see. It is an invitation to dance between paradigms and like all good travel stories, the memory lingers.  - Tim Sharp 2000

Phantom Foreign Vienna (2004) is a configuration of works - a book, a photo series and a film, which confronts various aspects of immigration.
While on a multi-cultural journey round the world in the years 1991 and 1992 during which she never left the city of Vienna, Lisl Ponger meticulously collected Super-8 sequences of celebrations, weddings and dances. The initial concern was with making visible the cultural multiplicity which, from the point of view of their public presence in the city, simply didn’t exist. The return - a good ten years later - calls exactly that act of visualization into question. "What am I really seeing?" asks the commentary, spoken by Ponger herself. But it is not only that which makes it clear how conscious the film is with regard to the problems of how ethnicity is treated.

It appears that in every act of ‘making visible’ there is a simultaneous and inevitable tendency to capture the flee(t)ing and diasporic in fixed, stereotypical imagery as well.
In the process Ponger stages things on a number of ambiguous levels simultaneously. In the form of diary entries she shows that her encounter with the ‘multi-culti’ Vienna of the early Nineties as profoundly subjective. Right from the beginning every form of objective classification is rejected.

The project (originally titled Fremdes Wien (1992)) was a book and a series of photographs for exhibition. It was motivated by the invisibility of immigrant communities in Vienna. True, they were present in the media, but always as an issue defined and discussed as a ‘problem’ by the majority of the population, in this case, Austrians and almost always, therefore in a negative light. It meant, quite simply, that the immigrant communities rarely, if ever, were able to talk for themselves. They were talked about. The project gave the people depicted a platform to say what they wanted and the photographs, taken from blown up single super 8 film frames, made an attempt at avoiding sharply-focused, cliché images of cultural representatives in traditional costume.
Looked at in retrospect, the work is only partly successful and it was this realization that led to Phantom Foreign Vienna.

It is, in a word, glorious.... what I feel is the inherent power and mystery of such material, the arrangement of these images and sounds into a definition of cinema constitutes one of the greatest pedagogic films I have seen.... my main reaction is to have my socks knocked off.

Film ist 1-6

Film is. consists almost exclusively, of sequences from existing scientific films. These films are about the acrobatic flights of pigeons, the intelligence testing of apes; about "reversed worlds" and stereoscopic vision; hurricanes and impact waves in the air. How glass breaks, children walk and how a Mercedes crashes into a stone wall in
slow motion. The contempt with which scientific films are received is not directed against the content, but rather against their conventional, unimaginative, ridiculous and commentary-contaminated appearance. Similarly, the fascination with some of the teaching films can be attributed almost exclusively to the power of their images -
images which one has never seen, even in the cinema.

Film is. brings an abundance of these images together. One can feel not only the politics, but also the singular poetry of scientific film, which often makes use of "experimental" techniques - extreme slow motion, extreme time lapse, telescopic or microscopic camera work, solarising, x-ray film.

Film is. is a poetic film in itself. Just how the various pieces find their own place and rhythm reminds one of modern poetry or the photo work of the American artist John Baldessari. Pictures which, from their origins, have nothing to do with each other, which don't "belong together", are compared, tied together, fused with each other .Alexander Horwath

Film ist. has been dubbed by its maker Gustav Deutsch as a work in progress, an on-going project of which this DVD should be considered just one incarnation. Its aim is to dissect and define cinema by breaking it down and manipulating its component parts. To date Deutsch has done so by trawling through the archives, finding obscure and forgotten snippets of film and rendering them as a truly unique experience. The project so far extends to twelve parts or chapters, the first six having been released as a 60-minute work in 1998, the second in 2002 in 93-minute form. Here however, we find a 77-minute “best of”, so to speak, compiled by Deutsch himself, with all twelve parts included albeit in truncated form.

Not that this should dissuade the potential buyer. In spite of the edits Deutsch’s intentions remain clear and Film ist. still amounts to a terrific achievement. Moreover, the disc allows us to watch his efforts as a single entity rather than two, though the option is also there to approach the separate parts in whichever order we see fit. That said, the whole experience is the way to go for ultimately Film ist. is much more than the sum of its parts.

What’s most remarkable about all this is the fact that the source material doesn’t appear to be the most promising. The first half all the more so with its reconfigurations of straight-faced science documentaries, whilst the second opts for cinema’s first thirty years and its early attempts at the narrative form. Yet Deutsch has a genuine eye for the surprising meaning that every single excerpt is in possession of either a great beauty or some other remarkable strength. Furthermore, he proves a terrific filmmaker in his own right, his editing work transforming these various bits and pieces into a remarkable tapestry of unexpected associations and meanings. Indeed, there’s a great deal of work to be done on our part as we decipher his mock narratives and draw everything together. The second chapter, for example, entitled ‘Light and Darkness’ reassembles shots of moons, eyeballs and lightning into some kind of avant-garde horror film, and one superbly augmented by the director’s minimalist electronic score. And yet, such associations are likely to be in the eye of the beholder; each viewing reveals new meanings and new connections, one time a sequence can be shocking, the next it’s dryly comic.

In this respect Film ist. could be read as a call to arms from Deutsch. Over its 77 minutes he teaches us that there is no such thing as a banal image, merely a case of us needing to recognise the context (hence the chapter divisions). Film is, as he so rightly puts it, footage of crash test dummies or the bizarre sight of various boffins messing around with their perception. As such his efforts, much like Bill Morrison’s, become a plea to preserve this stuff and not forget (or, more damagingly, ignore) about it. Especially with regards to the science documentary footage we leave the film with a sense that we’ve been ignoring a whole genre and instead just picking out the accepted highpoints: the natural history films of Jean Painlève, say, or perhaps those titles which Amos Vogel used to program as part of Cinema 16. Indeed, Film ist. is a film with which to open our eyes and to renew our faith in cinema. Anytime you become bored, tired or repeatedly disappointed by what it has to offer, this is exactly the piece to put on. Through the simplest of things it manages to reconfirm just how magical the moving image can be.

The Disc
Another Region 0 PAL release from Austrian label Index, Film ist. once again finds the small-scale outfit handing out a fine presentation. Given the source material, the film of course comes with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and it’s preserved here alongside the DD2.0 soundtrack. (The film contains brief snatches of dialogue on two occasions, but is otherwise accompanied solely by Deutsch’s scoring.) Of course, the source material also makes it difficult to ascertain the qualities of the film’s transfer, but then there’s nothing that seems untoward. The clarity is there when and where you would expect and the same goes for the contrast. Moreover, Deutsch himself supervised in the production and as such we can safely that the presentation – both visually and aurally – was as he intended.

Interesting, this is one of the rare Index titles to contain special features beyond the usual (and typically excellent) 20-page booklet containing bilingual notes, essays and a filmography in both German and English. Of these additional pieces it is the 9-minute ‘Über. Gustav Deutsch’ featurette which proves the more rewarding. An interview with the filmmaker it allows him to discuss his major themes as well as his twin methods of “seeking and finding” and as such serves as a fine introduction. (Note that the interview is in German but comes with English subtitles.) Also present is a glimpse at how Film ist. has played in galleries as a multi-panel, enveloping DVD installation.

Fiilm Ist 7-12

2002 , 93 min

7 comic (19 min.)
8 magic (15 min.)
9 conquest (18 min.)
10 writing and language (12 min.)
11 emotions and passion (15 min.)
12 memory and document (11 min.)

This film can be screened in any order, with a minimum of three parts

In the beginning a woman emerges from darkness and goes through a door. She glances fearfully into an imponderable exterior shaded midnight blue. What follows occurs rapidly, with related motifs: There is slapstick (fat men and fall guys) and risqué images (women in changing rooms), melodramatic and moving scenes, while others are silly and destructive. Film ist. (7-12) is a collection of moving pictures from the first thirty years of a medium which was then still silent. According to Gustav Deutsch, film is so many things that a catalog of what it can be must necessarily remain open.

The actors/acrobats get into one literal cliffhanger after another, dangling from the façades of skyscrapers and climbing up ladders which extend into the sky. Early cinema explored thousands of different methods of slipping and falling photogenically, seemingly to the very extreme.

By 1925, all tricks and innovative gags had been used up, and since then film has become more calm, varying its established paces and falls and moving from physical back to psychological material. Deutsch’s found footage is peopled with recycled figures and the undead: Early cinema silently reproduces the living beings who once dared subject themselves to its gaze; it depicts what once seemed alive as a mere, though faded, reflection of light.

An unbounded love of cinema’s tangible material is obvious in Deutsch’s compilation. His images have been colorized lovingly, some of them are cloudy or scratched, sharp and vivid, or have a fantastic patina. The attractions one might find in cinema’s unstable raw material are as numerous (and ultimately: as inexplicable) as the desire to watch.

A DVD release celebrating the extraordinary young video and electronic music scene in Austria. These are radical avant-garde works that emerge logically from modern electronic music. The images sometimes tie in with the earliest pure abstract avant-garde films, but reveal themselves in everything to be exponents of contemporary digital technology.

Ever since the beginning of film there has been an interest in abstract filmmaking, some sort of search for an abstract film language that discards our traditional icon-based images. From the Dada movement of the ‘20s via the sound-visual experiments of someone like Mary Ellen Bute in the ‘40s, up to our current age: there has always been an interest from avant-garde filmmakers in the close relation between sound and (abstract) images. This search has most recently taken the form of the short video films (made by artists from all over the world), in which the artists (often) combine modern electronic music with abstract images which bear no direct connection with a naturalistic world, but instead revel in modern technology.

The selection of videos on this DVD is a selection of work from several of Austria’s most promising young video artists. All these works have a electronic soundtrack working in close collaboration with the images. While there are some obvious influences of earlier abstract filmmaking, these works clearly stem from our digital age with its ever evolving technology. These are the kind of works you normally only see at film festivals, without a chance of revisiting the films. But here lies your chance to watch these kind of films over and over again.

This is yet another winner from Austrian-based Index DVD, an indispensable source for cutting-edge, European avant-garde. The films included on this release offer a great selection of the latest developments in modern video art. The appeal of these very abstract works obviously depends completely on one’s interest in this kind of filmmaking, but for those interested this is one hell of a ride. There are liner notes included, but these aren’t really necessary, because either you love these films or you don’t, but on the other hand, the liner notes cannot hurt either. You have to look deep inside your wallet for this DVD, but we highly recommend this release!

BONUSTRACK: INTERVIEW MIT DIETMAR BREHM 2000, 8:30 min (TIV-TV station)

Even though the six films function perfectly well as individual works, I always had the feeling of filming a single work. The source of inspiration was much of the historical Roman literature I read. From this sprang the motivation for the sombre-sexual treatment of the pumping-screen body portrayals. In the end we are all living corpses and very soon dead again.
Dietmar Brehm

The moods of his films resemble an atmosphere between the dream and trauma. Brehm treats the dream as a source of strategies for association, similar to the secondary process to which according to Freud all the workings of the unconscious are subject. Dietmar Brehm a master of the grammar of a non-conceptual language.
Bert Rebhandl

...Brehm, a photographer and artist as well as filmmaker, makes his films from old and discarded footage, ideally the sort that invokes some kind of erotic scenario. From each of the films that make up his most ambitious project Schwarzer Garten (Black Garden, 1987-1999), Brehm collected a small selection of material and meshed the divergent images into perverse, semi-abstract, meditations on sexuality and violence. He edits the three or four different types of images (be it medical/scientific film, images taken from television, pornographic material or footage Brehm shot himself) together into an obscure matrix. The original images are distorted and degenerated. They are often overexposed and their grain enhanced through re-filming. Brehm re-films the footage in such a way as to create throbbing, pulsating images that visibly flicker at varying rates: an effect that he refers to as the “pumping screen”. The overall distortion allows for the seamless integration of footage from different sources.

The cinema of Hollywood is a cinema of exclusion, reduction and denial, a cinema of repression. There is always something behind that which is being represented, which was not represented. And it is exactly that that is most interesting to consider.

Which Way to CA? collects 18 films from 1968-1990 by the late pioneer of structural film, Kurt Kren. Born in Vienna in 1929, his filmic experiments spanned almost five decades, during which he reconsidered montage, animation, and the documentation of audiovisual events from a truly unique perspective. Includes 26/71: Cartoon: Balzac and the Eye of God and No Film among others. - Facets Description

Following on from Index’s previous Kurt Kren compilations, Action Films and Structural Films, Which Way to CA? gathers the filmmaker’s “documentary” works. Of course, any such term becomes extremely slippery when applied to Kren, hence the inverted commas. You could argue, for example, that his capturing of various performances by Gunter Brüs or Otto Mühl constitutes documentary representations even though their editing structures make them distinctly “experimental” in execution. Similarly some of the titles which figured on the Structural Films disc could happily earn the documentary tag courtesy of the manner in which they capture the landscapes around them; I’m thinking, in this case, of the likes of 31/75 Asyl and 37/78 Tree Again. Indeed, even this particular disc has difficulty staying within its own remit. 26/71 Zeichenfilm – Balzac und das Auge Gottes is a 31-second animation which prefigures the work Phil Mulloy has been putting out since the early nineties. 42/83 No Film, even shorter at just three seconds, is just that: the words “No Film” onscreen for what seems like barely a moment.

So what is a Kren documentary? Hardly surprising, it appears to take on a number of forms. Early on in the (chronologically arranged) disc we find the likes of 18/68 Venecia Kaputt and 22/69 Happy-End. The former scrawls apocalyptic doodles over footage of Venice; the latter offers askew, barely-in-the-frame representations of Kren’s trips to the cinema (Bullitt’s famous car chase is amongst the near-unrecognisable snippets on slight display) interrupted by images of hardcore sexual imagery. In other words this is documentary as situationist prank; Kren having a little chuckle into his sleeve and inviting us, perhaps, to laugh along too.

But then this isn’t all that Which Way to CA? has to offer. Elsewhere various shorts see Kren providing documentary as distillation, reducing events, activities and meanderings to their very essentials. In some cases the results are initially abstract and allow their realities to slowly creep in: 24/70 Western’s representation of a photo depicting the aftermath of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam is a key example. Other films are more immediately perceivable: 34/77 Tschibo captures Kren’s notes from previous projects in small frame bursts thus creating an onslaught of instantly recognisable, yet ultimately incomprehensible, words and doodles; 23/69 Underground Explosion is a chaotic blend of sound and image recording a festival featuring, amongst others, Amon Düul and VALIE EXPORT in a manner which captures its atmosphere just as astutely in five minutes as Michael Wadleigh’s Woodstock does over three-hours-plus.

In this latter respect a number of these films recall some of Derek Jarman’s earliest Super 8 experiments: TG in Heaven (proto-industrial band Throbbing Gristle performing at the eponymous nightclub), Pirate Film (featuring William Burroughs and Sloane Square: A Room of One's Own, this latter example essentially a home movie. Indeed, home movie is a key term when it comes to some of Which Way to CA?’s content. Kren himself even uses the expression “bad home movies” in respect of the completely amateurish nature in which he only edited in camera for a handful of these shorts, never knowing quite what the end results would be until the films were ready for their first viewing. As such the spectre of Andy Warhol’s filmic output is also present when viewing the disc. Of course, Warhol’s lack of editing was done in conjunction with simply leaving the camera running and producing long takes as opposed to the chaotic series of bursts which Kren gives us. Nevertheless, the lack of after-the-fact manipulation leads to an unavoidable sense that reality is in some way being captured. You could even argue, therefore, that these particular titles – amongst them 40/81 Breakfast im Grauen and the film which gives this compilation its title, 39/81 Which Way to CA? - are documentary expressions in their purest form: only reality, nothing else.

There’s one further facet to these films worth mentioning and that’s their often incredible visual beauty. 40/81 Getting Warmer, whether intentional or not, has a lovely off-kilter colour balance which brings out the reds and the greens. 33/77 Keine Donau attains a texture akin to either animation or genuine 3D. And then there’s 43/84 1984, Kren’s contribution to documenting American politics. Shooting a pre-election televised debate featuring Ronald Reagan, this short is oddly reminiscent of one of David Lynch’s more bizarre impulses. It’s a thing of strange beauty and one of the most beguiling pieces of cinema I’ve ever seen. - DVDTIMES REVIEW

INVISIBLE ADVERSARIES / UNSICHTBARE GEGNER  A 1976, 16mm, col & bw, 104 Min - VALIE EXPORT

Anna, an artist, is obsessed with the invasion of alien doubles bent on total destruction. Her schizophrenia is reflected in the juxtapositions of long movie camera takes with violently edited montages: private with public spaces; black & white with colour, still photographs with video, earsplitting sounds with disruptive camera angles. Anna uses her body like a map; after a devastating quarrel with her lover, she paints red stitches on herself. Watching their scenes together, we realize how seldom, if ever before, the details of sexual intimacy have been shown in film from the point of view from a woman. Export privileges rupture over unity and never settles for one-dimensional solutions
(Artforum, Nov. 1980)

One of the most original films in this year´s Exposition, Invisible Adversaries is a tour de force of cinematic invention. It should bring international recognition to Valie Export, an Austrian experimental filmmaker known heretofore in America mostly by reputation. This is her first attempt at a feature-length narrative, and it reveals a prodigious talent at work. The title refers to extraterrestrial aliens called ´Hyksos´, malevolent forces that enter human bodies like incubi and initiate the decline of civilization. Not to be taken literally, the Hyksos are a poetic metaphor for the modern Zeitgeist, the apocalyptic mood of the times. Ms. Export uses this theme as a framework for some of the most audacious and amazing experiments since Cocteau. The comparison is appropriate, for on one level Invisible Adversaries is about art and the artist, a modern Blood of the Poet. To this, Export brings a fresh and intelligent sensibility, characteristically self-referential. Her visual resources include mirrors, still photography, video, dance, and films within the film, all employed with a bold and surprising inventiveness.

In the 1960s and 1970s actionism and happenings provided a foundation for performance art, the exceptional form in which women are as numerous but more recognized as men. Three generations of artists set out in As She Likes It to formulate a statement on our times, using the expressive power of voice and body, dispensing with exclusion of the male world more self-confidently than in the early years.

Peter Weibel's (earlier works) (...) belong to the heroic years of a period of upheaval in which everything seemed possible in art. However, the artist not only made his appearance as a critic of public media but took the opportunity of presenting his own themes... (Hans Belting)
---------------------------------------
Conceptually, the "Tele-Actions", as Peter Weibel called a series of works, which were begun in 1969 and continued on into the 1970s, contain a delightful contradiction. Actions have an immediate and spontaneous character. They are akin to performance and usually take place before a public and, in the case of art, predominately in gallery spaces. The Vienna Actionism which, at the time had already passed its zenith provides pertinent examples of this. (...) And yet the "Tele-Actions" were meant for television, where the predominant expectation was that programmes are transmitted in a mostly anonymous and, at any rate, ritual format. From the outset, the medium established a distance between programme and public, whereas reverse actions generated contacts between the actors and their viewers. The television viewer at the time must have experienced this as something of an assault when the programme was "disturbed" by an unexpected impostor who refused to abide by the rules.

Weibel (wanted) (...) to claim TV for art, something which had little if anything to do with simply presenting art on television. The intention was far rather concerned with "doing" art there and hence, mobilising a new public. (...) the "Tele-actions" differ from other such similar attempts in that they critically analyse the images shown on television and, as a consequence, the television itself, namely, they expose the place of the act such that the images make visible the common cliches shown there. They thwart the apparent truth of TV images by means of an intervention whereby the TV is revealed as a producer of illusions. The alarmed viewer should thereby be made aware of just how little he usually managed to see and the extent to which stereotypes predominate in this repertoire of images.

Operating in a wide number of artistic genres, Austrian-born Linda Christanell began working with film in 1975. A true avant-gardist, Christanell's cinematic compositions juxtapose seemingly unrelated images in an attempt to create a space outside of the confines of narrative desire. These shorts, executed between 1984 and 1986 in Vienna, exude an amazingly fresh intimacy and vitality. Referred to by the filmmakers as »home movies«, they record actionistic performances in the directors´ own living quarters, with added soundtracks of intermittent percussive sounds. Alice Kuzniar

With: Susanna Heilmayr, Ursula Pürrer, Angela Hans Scheirl, Margarete Neumann, Gabriele Szekatsch, Anthony Escott, Luise Kubelka

Flaming Ears is a pop sci-fi lesbian fantasy feature set in the year 2700 in the fictive burnt out city of Asche. It follows the tangled lives of three woman: Sy, comic book artist; Volly, a performance artist and sexed up pyromaniac; and Nun, an amoral alien with predilection for reptiles.

It´s a story of love and revenge, and an antiromantic plea for love in its many forms. It´s also a story laced with sex, violence and a pulsating soundtrack, a cyberdyke movie, stimulating both the body and the brain.

Shot in Super-8 and exploded to 16mm, Flaming Ears is a German Blade Runner - about a sexed-up pyromaniac, her red-plastic-clad mate, and a revengful comix artist - characterized by a fierce, punky throb and gelatinous F/X. As sapphic thrillers go, it's twenty time more fun than Basic Instinct. [...]

Nowhere else is talk of the »panoptic era«  an eye that sees everything yet remains elusive  clearer than in the medium that has taken omnipresence and fleetingness to a global scale: the Internet. On the Internet, the paradigm known thus far for our imaging apparatus has become invalid: there is no longer a single, central perspective, but instead, a myriad of viewing angles that broadcast over webcams, pumping incessant images into the digital data stream. The »vacuum« in the title of Dariusz Kowalski´s cinematic essay, which follows his earlier works Elements and Luukkaankangas, is therefore not a void, but a powerful generator, an unremitting doubling of the world: in image.

03 - Burning palace, 32 MIN,
Bonustrack: Burning Down the palace, the making off - 5 min.

All of these work deal somewhat with a fake factor. Part Time Heroes handles the star concept, in a larger than life way; Running Sushi refers to comics and manga. Burning Palace, on the other hand, is based on The Art of Seduction. (...) For the human body to remain interesting, one must constantly put it in a different light or in another context. One has to look at the body sideways. With this, one achieves a large choreographic change in perspective, because everything is altered. In another context, one also experiences the body in a new way, already because you view it differently.
(Chris Haring)

Burning Palace turned out to be a melancholy film. Here, I introduced five people who are in a show at a bar, who live in this hotel and have very different relationships with one another. After the show - they are already sleeping - they are woken by Pan for the night and therefore wake up to the destruction that is held within them. This often has a sexual origin or it´s mixed in together.
(Mara Mattuschka)

INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED (1968)
This utterly unclassifiable film is one of Makavejev’s most freewheeling farces, assembled from the “lost” footage of the first Serbian talkie, a silly melodrama titled Innocence Unprotected, made during the Nazi occupation; contemporary interviews with the megaman who made it and other crew members; and images of the World War II destruction, and subsequent rebuilding, of Belgrade. And at its center is a (real-life) character you won’t soon forget: Dragoljub Aleksic, an acrobat, locksmith, and Houdini-style escape artist whom Makavejev uses as the absurd and wondrous basis for a look back at his country’s tumultuous recent history.

Jorge Luis Borges

Eduardo A. Russo, El Amante Cine, 1994

George and Mike Kuchar, twin brothers from the Bronx, are among the most prolific and inventive American filmmakers of the past half-century, and perhaps the most eccentric. Avid moviegoers as children, they began making 8 millimeter epics, and after graduating from the High School of Industrial Arts in New York they gravitated toward the thriving underground film scene.

Shooting cheaply, devising homemade special effects and casting friends and acquaintances, the Kuchars produced — sometimes in collaboration, sometimes apart — touchstones of the 1960s cinematic avant-garde like “Corruption of the Damned,” “Sins of the Fleshapoids” and “Hold Me While I’m Naked.”

Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary “It Came From Kuchar” provides generous clips of these and later films, enough to give a flavor of the brothers’ blend of camp, melodrama, horror, psychological exploration and sexual provocation. (And also at least a superficial sense of the differences between them.) This sampling is fleshed out by interviews with George and Mike Kuchar themselves, and also with the usual talking-head parade of friends, colleagues, critics and students.

The portrait that emerges is affectionate and fascinating. The brothers themselves are un-self-consciously talkative, unassumingly odd and frequently very funny. “Did your parents get along?” George is asked. “Oh, I wouldn’t go that far,” he replies.
