This supplementary disc included with Warner's seven-disc "Complete Thin Man Collection" highlights the series' stars on two documentaries. "William Powell: A True Gentleman" (30 min.) features film historians discussing Powell's life from the early days of motion pictures through a career that spanned some 90 motion pictures. A student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts — despite opposition from his father, who wanted him to become a lawyer — Powell had a successful theater career and moved to film after a director saw him on stage. Powell's first film role was a small one, as Professor Moriarty's assistant in a 1922 version of William Gillette's play "Sherlock Holmes," starring John Barrymore as the famous sleuth. His suave demeanor, dark, hooded eyes and pencil-moustache made him a natural to play villains in silent films. He also played a few comic roles during that period, too — a little bit of everything, in fact, appearing in a staggering 34 films between 1932 and 1938. With the advent of sound, Powell's cultured voice shot him to the top of the studios' A-lists, and he starred in a series of successful thrillers as urbane detective Philo Vance. After a Depression-era box office drop, Powell found his career cooling — until he was chosen to play Nick Charles in The Thin Man, the first in the immensely popular series of films that put him back on top. Always one to admire a sassy dame, Powell was briefly married to Carole Lombard, after which they remained good friends. He was also engaged to Jean Harlow at the time of her death and was, by all reports, devastated — and then received a diagnosis of cancer a few months later and did radio work while recovered, returning to the screen a year later for Another Thin Man. He made a number of other memorable films — including Life with Father (1947) and his last title, Mister Roberts (1955) — and retired at 61. The documentary, narrated by Michael York (not Kevin Kline, as stated on the cover) is very basic, covering just the nuts and bolts of Powell's life and career, but for those unfamiliar with the actor's body of work, it gives some nice insights, including rarely seen clips from his silent-era films.

The second feature, "Myrna Loy: So Nice to Come Home To" (46 min.), is a more quirky, detail-oriented piece, made by critic Richard Schickel and narrated by Kathleen Turner. Rather than a linear biography, the feature looks at Loy's Hollywood image through clips from the MGM library. In films like Test Pilot, Wife vs. Secretary, Libeled Lady, and Love Crazy, she played sassy, eyebrow-raised dames who were smart as well. But it took awhile for Hollywood to figure out how to use her to her best advantage — in the early days of film, Loy's almond-shaped eyes got her work as geisha girls, lusty gypsies, and exotic vamps. But talkies were good to her, with her terrific voice and sly wit, and by the mid-1930s she'd become MGM's most popular female star. 'Popular," however, didn't translate to "well-treated," and she made history when she went on strike to pressure MGM into giving her a pay raise requisite with her earning power — and she got it. The Thin Man franchises were part of what made her such a hot commodity, but they also helped cement her image as the "perfect wife," an image she found ironic given the foibles of her personal life and her four failed marriages. Privately, she took time off from her career to devote herself to the war effort during WWII, making no films from 1942 to 1946 while she lived in New York, working for the Red Cross and overseeing entertainment for military hospitals. Loy later did theater in New York. Schickel's documentary does a nice job of touching on all aspect of Loy's lengthy career, all the way to the honors she received at the Kennedy Center (hosted, not coincidentally, by Kathleen Turner) and her last role, in the TV movie Summer Solstice with Henry Fonda. While Turner gets far too much screen time for a feature that's ostensibly about Loy, it's still a nice tribute to one of Hollywood's great actresses.

Warner Bros. DVD Alias Nick & Nora offers very clean, crisp transfers of both featurettes, presented in their original full-screen ratios (1.33:1). Also on board is an episode from the 1958 "This Man" TV series starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk and a 1936 Lux Radio Theater broadcast of The Thin Man starring Loy and Powell.

George and Mike Kuchar, twin brothers from the Bronx, are among the most prolific and inventive American filmmakers of the past half-century, and perhaps the most eccentric. Avid moviegoers as children, they began making 8 millimeter epics, and after graduating from the High School of Industrial Arts in New York they gravitated toward the thriving underground film scene.

Shooting cheaply, devising homemade special effects and casting friends and acquaintances, the Kuchars produced — sometimes in collaboration, sometimes apart — touchstones of the 1960s cinematic avant-garde like “Corruption of the Damned,” “Sins of the Fleshapoids” and “Hold Me While I’m Naked.”

Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary “It Came From Kuchar” provides generous clips of these and later films, enough to give a flavor of the brothers’ blend of camp, melodrama, horror, psychological exploration and sexual provocation. (And also at least a superficial sense of the differences between them.) This sampling is fleshed out by interviews with George and Mike Kuchar themselves, and also with the usual talking-head parade of friends, colleagues, critics and students.

The portrait that emerges is affectionate and fascinating. The brothers themselves are un-self-consciously talkative, unassumingly odd and frequently very funny. “Did your parents get along?” George is asked. “Oh, I wouldn’t go that far,” he replies.

Adolfo González Arrieta (Madrid, 28 de agosto de 1942) es un director de cine español, considerado pionero del cine independiente tanto en España como en Francia, donde realizó parte importante de su producción, por el carácter artesanal de esta y por el singular aire de libertad que rezuman sus películas. Habitualmente firma sus pel¡culas con variaciones de su nombre, como Udolfo Arrieta, Alfo Arrieta o Adolpho Arrieta.

Su lenguaje es francamente poético, al margen de las convenciones narrativas, por lo que se lo ha relacionado con el cine de Jean Cocteau.

Habiendo cultivado previamente la pintura, Arrieta comenzó su obra cinematográfica con los cortometraje rodados en Madrid El crimen de la pirindola (1965) e Imitación del ángel (1966), que constituyeron un hito de iniciación del cine independiente en España. En 1967 se trasladó a París con Javier Grandes, actor habitual de la mayoría de sus películas, donde tuvo ocasión de vivir los acontecimientos de mayo de 1968.

En 1969 conoció a Jean Marais, actor protagonista de La Belle et la Bête (1945), Orphée (1949) y Le testament d’Orphée (1959) de Jean Cocteau, del que además había sido amante. Con él Arrieta rodó su primer largometraje, Le jouet criminel (1969), que fue asociado al cine de Cocteau por su carácter poético. Siguió Le château de Pointilly (1972), que recibió una crítica elogiosa de Marguerite Duras.

Con Las intrigas de Sylvia Couski (1974) ganó el Gran Premio del Festival de Toulon. La crítica la acogió con entusiasmo, y fue considerada la primera película underground parisina. La sucedieron Tam Tam (1976), una fiesta ininterrumpida en Nueva York, París y España; y Flammes (1978), la historia de una fantasía sexual de la infancia que se convierte en una pasión real en la etapa adulta. Posteriormente, realizó Grenouilles (1983), Kiki, la gata (episodio de la serie de TV Delirios de amor, 1989), Merlín (1990) y Narciso (2004).

Su penúltima película ha sido el mediometraje Vacanza permanente (2006), premiado en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Lucca, que ha supuesto para Arrieta un renacimiento creativo. De hecho, se ha equiparado la fluida transparencia con que capta en ella el Madrid actual a la desinhibida claridad con que retrató el París de 1973 en Las intrigas de Sylvia Couski. Fue estrenada en La Casa Encendida de Madrid el 27 de mayo de 2007, en el marco del festival de polipoesía Yuxtaposiciones, y presentada junto a su autor por el escritor Leopoldo Alas.

En marzo de 2008, la sala La Enana Marrón, también de Madrid, dedicó un ciclo a la obra de Arrieta en que se proyectaron algunas de sus películas más representativas.

La editora francesa re:voir ha comenzado a publicar la obra de Arrieta en DVD, empezando por "La trilogía del ángel"

Matt Helm era la creatura literaria nacida de la imaginación de Donald Hamilton en 1960. Su primera aparición fue en la amarga novela Death of a Citizen, donde encarna a un agente de inteligencia retirado, casado y con hijos. Uno de ellos es secuestrado por una ex-amante y compañera del servicio secreto que resulta ser una doble agente trabajando para los rusos. Helm la persigue y tortura hasta poder recuperar a su hija, pero su esposa - descubriendo el cuerpo mutilado de la espía - no resiste y lo abandona.

Como puede verse, el tono de las novelas de Hamilton difiere enormemente de los films que todos conocemos de Dean Martin, pero también se aleja mucho de la línea de libros de Ian Fleming. Mezcla tanto la rutina diaria (y hasta monótona) del espionaje de Len Deighton o John Le Carré, con cierto salvajismo muy propio de las novelas de Mickey Spillane (autor del célebre Mike Hammer). En muchos casos, Helm es realmente un asesino al servicio del gobierno. Y ciertamente el tono de las novelas de Hamilton bajaría un poco su descarnada violencia en las siguientes entregas (y en algunas incluso, su personaje tiene algún rasgo de comedia que lo acercaría mínimamente a su par cinematográfico), pero siempre hay un tono oscuro en sus relatos. No puede acusarse a Hamilton de ser un imitador o de alguien que se hubiera subido a la Bondmania de los 60, pero sí es uno de los autores que surgen cuando el género literario del espionaje comenzaba a tomar vuelo. Antes de ello, Hamilton escribía westerns y había desarrollado algunos guiones para Hollywood, como la excelente y multiestelar The Big Country (con Gregory Peck y Charlton Heston).
